Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors affecting hyponatremia in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures. Methods: 172 elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture were included,in which there were 165 cases complicated with medical disorder.Serum sodium levels was detected at time point of 1d and 3d after admission. We investigated the incidence of hyponatremia in patients with or without medical disease, observed the relationship of hyponatremia occurrence with age, fracture type and gender. Results: There were 172 cases,56 males and 116 females who met the inclusion criteria.94 had the fracture in left side and 78 in right side. With reference to Association for the Study of Internal Fixation fractures type,65 were 31A1 type,96 were 31A2 type and 11 were 31A3 type.165 cases were associated with medical disease,in 62 cases was complicated with hypertension,in 38 cases with coronary heart disease,in 20 cases with pulmonary disease,in 23 cases with diabetes, and in 22 cases with cerebrovascular disease.79/172 patients had hyponatremia. When compared with normonatramic patients, there was no significant difference with reference to gender, position, age, hypertension, coronary heart disease,or fracture type. There was no significant difference in patients with or without cerebrovascular disease and patients with or without diabetes mellitus. However, the incidence of hyponatremia was higher in patients with lung disease compared to those without it.Conclusion: The incidence of hyponatremia is increased in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures due to pulmonary disease.
