Objective: To compare the ciliary morphology and ciliary beat frequency in human fallopian tubes between patients with adenomyosis and uterine leiomyoma. And further study the impact of adenomyosis on the function of fallopian tubes.Materials: Thirty-one patients in our hospital who who had undergone(subtotal)hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy from 2013 to 2015 were recruited in the current study.Patients in this study were divided into two groups,18 patients of uterine adenomyosis as case group and 13 patients of uterine leiomyoma as control group.Fallopian tube samples including ampulla and isthmus portions were collected accordingly. Methods: Ciliary morphology was observed by both light and transmission electron microscope and further determination was made on the percentage of ciliated cells in both ampulla and isthmus regions in both groups.Ciliary beat actions in ampulla and isthmus parts were recorded by the inverted bright-field microscope and ciliary beat frequencies were measured and analysed. Then a comparative study would be done. Results: 1.The gross morphology and ultrastructure of ciliated cells of fallopian tubes(including ampulla and isthmus)from both groups were normal and no apparent difference existed between two groups;2.The percentage of ciliated cells in the ampulla was significantly higher than that in the isthmus in each group(P<0.05).3.In either ampulla or isthmus, the ciliated cell percentages between the case group and control group were at comparable levels and no apparent difference was observed(P>0.05).4.CBF in the ampulla was similar to that in the isthmus in the same individual. Moreover, there was no statistical difference observed in the CBF of either ampulla or isthmus between the two groups. Conclusion: The ciliary morphology and CBF of human fallopian tube in adenomyosis patients has no abnormality comparing with uterine leiomyoma.Whether adenomyosis affect the normal function of fallopian tubes still need further studies and the impact of adenomyosis on fallopian tubes could be clarified from another angle.
