Major depressive disorder(MDD)is a common disease that severely damages psychosocial functioning and diminishes quality of life.MDD was ranked the third cause of burden of disease worldwide and projected that it will rank first in 2030 by the World Health Organization(WHO).The diagnosis and treatment of MDD often pose challenges for clinicians in practice due to its various manifestations, unpredictable course and prognosis, and variable response to treatment.Clinicians should understand the pathogenesis of MDD profoundly to solve the problem above. The brain-gut-microbiota axis is considered as a new point to the research of MDD.Based on the new hypothesis,we summarize the current mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of MDD in this field to provide evidence for clinicians.
