The ?-titanium alloy is a kind of alloy, which exhibits characteristics of low elastic modulus, high corrosion resistance and well biocompatibility. It is thought to be a promising alloy using in orthopedic. As our previous study demonstrated that despite of the low modulus Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy shows, its biocompatibility and bone forming ability is equal to the traditional titanium Ti6Al4V.In order to improve the biocompatibility and bone forming ability of Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy,in the present study we performed micro-arc oxidation(MAO)to Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy to form a porous and strontium-containing coating on the material. Then we evaluated the biocompatibility and bone forming ability of Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy through the in vitro and in vivo experiments. As to the in vitro tests,we used scanning electron microscopy to detect the morphology of MAOed coating.Atomic force microscopy was applied to test the roughness of the coating.Video contact-angle measurement system was used to acquire contact angle of the coating.Besides,as to evaluate the MAOed coating materials' biocompatibility in vitro we performed MTT assay,ALP test and cell morphology-adhesion test on materials.Concerning the in vivo experiments,we set up an animal model by pressing fit materials into femurs of rabbits. Finally, animals were sacrificed and micro-CT,histological and sequential fluorescent labeling analysis were done to determine the bone forming ability of different samples. The results of the present study demonstrated that the MAOed porous and strontium-containing coating on the material can improve the biocompatibility and bone forming ability of Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy through the in vitro or in vivo tests. Therefore we gave a conclusion that compared with the traditional titanium Ti6Al4V,the MAOed porous and strontium-containing Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy not only showed a low modulus, but also exhibited higher biocompatibility and bone forming ability, which means that the MAOed porous and strontium-containing Ti35Nb2Ta3Zr alloy is a promising titanium material using in orthopedic surgery.
