?Objectives? The incidence of precocious puberty has risen, since the 1960 s.Studies have shown that, from both social and psychological perspectives, early maturation may have bad effect on children's health. There are studies found that the onset of puberty was assumed to be associated with nutrition. At present, researches which explore the relationship between dietary factors and sexual development were not too much. And the actual relationship between dietary intake and pubertal development is still unknown.Firstly, this study aimed to explore the effect of dietary risk factors on precocious puberty through a case-control study. Then, this study selected Shanghai primary and secondary school girls as the survey object to examine the association between meat consumption and early menarche among school girls in Shanghai. We hope to provide the basis for correcting the children's eating habits and the preventing precocious puberty.?Methods? 1.This study was a 1:1 matched case-control study.A total of 120 Girls in case group are diagnosed with precocious puberty in Xinhua Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology.Control group selected 120 normal girls who were age matched.Age,household income, parental education level, parental occupation, physical activity and sleep time were obtained by standardized questionnaires.Food intakes were collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire.Conditioned logistic regression was used to analyze the association between diet and precious puberty.2.The study randomly selected 1981 school girls in Shanghai through Probability-Proportional-to-Size Sampling. The sampling was conducted in 20 randomly selected primary schools,20 junior middle schools, and 20 senior middle schools.986 girls who had experienced menarche were analyzed. One class was randomly selected per grade per school.Meat intakes(including pork, beef, lamb, poultry and processed meat)were collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire.Menarche ages and other covariates including household income, physical activity, parental education level and sleep time were obtained by standardized questionnaires.Height, weight and percentage of body fat were measured by trained field staff.Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between intake of meat and early menarche(defined as menarche age<12 y).?Results? 1.Girls in case group had significantly higher height, weight and BMI.After controlling for BMI,household income, parental education, sleep and physical activity, girls consumed livestock meat<4times/week had a lower risk of precocious puberty, compared with those consumed livestock meat ?10times/week(OR: 0.45,95% CI: 0.21–0.95).Girls with fried foodbetween 1 time/month and 1 time/week had a significantly lower risk of precocious puberty than those consuming fried food?1 time/week(OR: 0.40,95% CI: 0.16-0.99).Girls with fried <1 time/week also had a lower risk of precocious puberty(OR: 0.34,95% CI: 0.14-0.81).Girls who never consumed sugared beverages had a lower risk of precocious puberty, compared with those consumed sugared beverages>1 time/month(OR: 0.38,95% CI: 0.18-0.82).Neither the consumption of Western fast-food,barbecue food and anti-season fruits and vegetables was associated with precocious puberty.2.Among all the school girls who had experienced menarche(n=986),the mean age at menarche was 11.97±1.24 years, which was 0.31 years earlier than the average menarche age of Chinese city girls in 2012.26.15%(n=518)of the girls had early menarche. After adjusting for age, girls with earlier menarche had significantly higher waist circumference, hip circumference, weight,BMI and percentage of body fat. After adjusting for BMI,age, physical activity, sleep, household income, parental education, girls who never consumed poultry(0 time/week)had a lower risk of early menarche, compared with those consumed poultry>1 time/week(OR: 0.61,CI: 0.39,0.96).Neither the consumption of pork, beef, lamb, processes meat nor total meat consumption was associated with menarche age.?Conclusions? The average menarche age of girls in Shanghai was slightly earlier.Higher consumption of poultry, livestock meat, fried food and sugared beverages was associated with high risk of precocious puberty.
