Objective: The present study was aimed to compare the clinical efficacy and complication between silicone stent implantation and metal coated stent implantation in benign airway stenosis. Methods: Retrospective study of clinical data of the total 25 patients with benign airway stenosis caused by different causes from January 2015 to December 2017 in the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University. There were 18 males and 7 females, aged from 22 to 82 years old.The patients were divided into two groups according to different treatment methods, silicone stent implantation group and metal coated stent implantation group.14 cases were enrolled in the silicone stent group which contained 8 cases after tracheotomy,3 cases after tracheal intubation,2 cases of postoperative airway disease of oftening and 1 case with recurrent cartilage inflammation. There were 11 cases in metal coated stent group: 6 cases after tracheotomy,2 cases after tracheal intubation,2 cases of postoperative airway disease of oftening and 1 case with benign airway tumor. There were no significant differences in age, gender and preoperative airway stenosis between the two groups. The diameter of stenosis segment of airway lumen and dyspnea index score of the two groups indexes before stent placement and 6 months after stent removal were observed,as well as the airway restenosis 12 months after stent removal. The complications like granulation tissue hyperplasia, stent displacement and secretion retention were recorded after the implantation in the two groups within 60 days. Results: The lumen diameter of the stenosis segment was increased 6 months after the stent was removed. The difference was statistically significant. The dyspnea index at 6 months after stent removal was reduced than that before stent implantation, and the difference was statistically significant. There was restenosis in the two groups after 12 months of stent removal, but there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. The following was the comparison of the complications between the two groups. For granulation hyperplasia, the score in silicone stent group was 2.18 ± 0.41 points according to the severity of the score, while the score was 1.07 ± 0.27 in metal coated stent group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant. The granulation proliferation of the silicone stent group was significantly decreased than metal coated stent group. As to the retention of secretions,5 cases were included in the silicone stent group and 4 cases were involved in the metal coated stent group. There was no significant difference between the two groups. There were 5 cases of stent displacement in the silicone stent group and 0 case in the metal coated stent group which was significant and statistically significant. The displacement of the silicone stent group was significantly increased than metal coated stent group. There were no serious complications such as airway rupture and stent fracture in both two groups.Conclusion:1.Both silicone and metal coated stent can effectively treat benign airway stenosis.2.For patients who need long-term placement of stent,Silicone stent is preferred because of less granulation caused by silicone stent.3.Metal coated stent is preferred for patients who do not need to place the stent for a long time.
