Background:Left atrial enlargement causes hemodynamic changes, and the correlation between left atrial size and ischemic stroke remains controversial. Therefore, this meta-analysis of relevant studies was conducted to investigate the correlation between left atrial size and ischemic stroke. Methods:Relevant literature about the correlation between left atrial size and ischemic stroke were searched until March 2019 from Pubmed,Embase,Cochrane Library,CNKI,Wanfang databases.Study selection and methodological quality of the articles were evaluated independently by two investigators. The study and data was extracted according to inclusion and exclusion criterias.RevMann5.2 and Stata12.0 were conducted for statistical analyses to investigate the correlation between left atrial size and ischemic stroke. Results:A total of 13 studies were screened out by inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria, for a total of 72,151 subjects.Of the 13 studies, eight prospective studies were compared the risk of ischemic stroke events in the experimental group(increased left atrial diameter)and the control group(normal left atrial diameter);fivereviewed Sexual studies were compared the left atrial diameter of the ischemic stroke group with the non-ischemic stroke group. In addition, five prospective studies were compared all-cause mortality in the experimental and control groups. This study found a significant correlation between the size of the left atrial diameter and the risk of ischemic stroke. The risk of ischemic stroke was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group(RR=2.02,95%CI:1.58-2.59,P<0.00001,I~2=90%),and the left atrial diameter of patients with ischemic stroke also increased significantly(SMD=1.16,95%CI:0.61-1.70,P<0.00001,I~2=94%).The all-cause mortality of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group(RR=1.48,95%CI:1.25-1.75,P<0.0001,I~2=85%).Conclusions:1 The risk of the ischemic stroke group was significantly increased in the experimental group; The left atrial diameter of the ischemic stroke group was significantly higher than that of the non-ischemic stroke group.2 The all-cause mortality rate of the experimental group was significantly increased, indicating that the left atrial size was associated with all-cause mortality.3 Left atrial enlargement may be an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality.
