Objective Depression and bipolar disorder are common mood disorders, and the pathogenesis is currently not well understood. Some research suggests that it may be related to the abnormal hemisphere asymmetry.Clinical and MRI studies have shown that the attentional function network of depression and bipolar disorder is impaired, while different attention networks are controlled by different brain regions, including frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe. Therefore, further study of the attention network asymmetry of the bilateral hemispheres of depression and bipolar disorder is very meaningful to explore its pathogenesis. The lateralized attention network test(LANT)can measure the attention network effects of the left and right cerebral hemispheres respectively. This study intends to use LANT to investigate whether the lateralization of attention network of bipolar disorder and depressive disorder is impaired. Methods Study 1:This study used the LANT to assess the alertness, orientation, and executive control network effects of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in 40 normal controls and 28 patients with bipolar disorder.Study 2:This study used the LANT to assess the alertness, orientation, and executive control network effects of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in 22 patients with depressive disorder. Results Study 1:In the response time(RT),there was a significant interaction between bipolar disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in orienting network(F = 4.67,p = 0.03).The result of post hoc test indicate that the RT of the left hemisphere was significantly longer than the right of healthy group in the orienting function(t =-4.47,p < 0.05),and there was no statistically significant difference between the left and right hemisphere of the depressive bipolar disorder in the orienting network(t =-0.21,p = 0.84).There was no statistically significant difference on interaction between bipolar disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the executive control(F = 3.47,p = 0.07)and altering network(F = 1.57,p = 0.21).In the error rate(ER),there was no statistically significant difference between bipolar disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in orienting network(Z =-0.15,p = 0.88)?executive control(Z =-1.42,p = 0.16)and altering network(Z =-0.14,p = 0.89).Study 2:In the response time(RT),there was a significant interaction between depressive disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in orienting network(F = 4.37,p = 0.04).The result of post hoc test indicate that the RT of the left hemisphere was significantly longer than the right of healthy group in the orienting network(t =-4.47,p < 0.05),and there was no statistically significant difference between the left and right hemisphere of the depressive disorder in the orienting network(t =-0.70,p = 0.50).There was no statistically significant difference on interaction between depressive disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the executive control(F = 1.88,p = 0.18)and altering network(F = 0.21,p = 0.65).There was no statistically significant difference on interaction between depressive disorders and bipolar disorders of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the orienting(F = 0.06,p = 0.79)executive control(F = 0.79,p = 0.38)and altering network(F = 0.45,p = 0.51).In the error rate(ER),there was no statistically significant difference between depressive disorders and controls of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in orienting network(Z =-1.36,p = 0.17)?executive control(Z = 0.52,p = 0.61)and altering network(Z =-0.29,p = 0.77).There was no statistically significant difference between depressive disorders and bipolar disorders of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in orienting network(Z =-0.91,p = 0.36)?executive control(Z =-1.64,p = 0.10)and altering network(Z =-0.06,p = 0.95).Conclusions Attention was impaired in patients with bipolar depression disorder and depressive disorder, which was mainly manifested by the disappearance of left hemisphere advantage of orienting network. There was no significant difference between depressive disorders and bipolar disorders of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the orienting?executive control?and altering network.
