Background:HADVis a mastadenovirus genus pathogen which is highly contagious. It is known to cause respiratory infection outbreaks in congregate and concentrated places such as dormitories health facilities and military training camps. The clinical course is mostly mild and self limiting in healthy and immunocompetentindividuals, while it could become severe even fatal in children, elderly and immunocompromised persons. With more than 67 serotypes identified and more serotypes are being discovered. It can cause respiratory illnes, urinary tract infections, keratoconjuctivitis. Its main symptoms include: cough, dyspnea, sputum, fever, chills, high, nasal congestion, sore throat, and pharyngeal inflammation.Diagnosis can be made by typical clinical symptoms including chest imaging, blood count, adenovirus pathogen examination. There is no specific treatment for ADV infection. Objective of the study:The main objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of adenovirus pneumonia in children especially duration of hospitalization, duration of fever, chest images findings and other manifestations by comparison with RSV pneumonia. Methods:Clinical records of children diagnosed with ADV pneumonia and RSVpneumonia treated in The First Hospital of Jilin University between December 2017 and December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively and analyzed.Patients were divided into two groups, adenovirus pneumonia(ADV)and Respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)group,in order to compare the characteristics of both groups. An Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the First Hospital of Jilin University before commencement of the study.Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.Results?Ninty six children were evaluated in the final analysis(48 adenovirus pneumonia and 48 respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia). The two groups were similar regarding their basic characteristics. The length of hospitalization of HAVD demonstrated was longer than RSV group(P<0.001),HADV group also showed a longer duration of fever than RSV group(P =0.04),The symptoms in HAVD group were high than RSV group including pleural effusion(P=0.041),atelectasis(P=0.027),occlusive bronchiolitis(P=0.011).The proportion of liver damage was higher in HADV group than RSV group(P=0.007),there were no significant difference between the two groups inemphysema(P=0.315),bronchiectasis(P=0.315),convulsion(P=0.082),severe erythema pleomorphica(P=0.315),cardiac damage(P=0.358),GI(P=0.646),WBC count(P=-1.735)and PLT count(P=0.086),but neutrophil ratio and CRP in the HAVD group were high than RSV group. Conclusion:In this study we evaluated the characteristics of the two groups HADV group and RSV group, and it showed that HADV patients have longer hospitalization length and longer duration of fever compared to RSV patients, they also have higher pulmonary and extrapulmonary complications such as pleural effusions, atelectasis, occlusive bronchiolitis, liver damage.
