Objective To investigate the correlation between serum uric acid(SUA)level and the prognosis of patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)receiving IMRT.Materials and Methods The clinical data of 314 patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma who received IMRT from July 2012 to July 2013 in the radiotherapy department of the first affiliated hospital of guangxi medical university were collected for retrospective analysis,Serum uric acid levels were detected before treatment and after IMRT,The patients were divided into two groups with the boundaries of 319.5umol/L before treatment and 302umol/L after radiotherapy, compared two groups of patients with the 5-year overall survival(OS),progression-free survival(PFS),distant metastasis free survival(DMFS),relapse-free survival(RFS).Univariate analysis and multivariate regression analysis of survival prognosis were performed.Result Serum uric acid before treatment was higher than that after radiotherapy, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The 5-year OS,PFS and DMFS of the group with serum uric acid greater than 302umol/L after treatment were superior to the group with serum uric acid less than 302umol/L,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The 5-year OS,PFS,DMFS and RFS of the group with higher serum uric acid level before treatment were compared with the group with lower serum uric acid level, and the differences were not statistically significant(P>0.05).Univariate analysis showed that age,T stage,N stage, clinical stage and serum uric acid after radiotherapy were all related to survival and prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. The results of multivariate analysis showed that serum uric acid after treatment was an independent prognostic factor affecting OS,PFS and DMFS in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Conclusion Serum uric acid level after treatment was of predictive value for the survival and prognosis of patients receiving IMRT for nasopharyngeal cancer, and high serum uric acid level may be beneficial for the prognosis.
