Objective:To analyze the CT findings and the pathogenic factors of calcified senile scleral plaque. Methods:All the subjects who received orbital CT examination from October 2013 to October 2018 in the radiology department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University were retrospectively analyzed. The subjects with scleral calcification plaque were set as the positive group?n1=25?,and part of the remaining subjects were randomly selected as the negative control group?n2=24?.The orbital CT manifestations of the subjects in the positive group were analyzed, and the serum calcium concentration, serum phosphorus concentration, serum total cholesterol concentration, serum total triglycerides concentration, serum glucose concentration and blood pressure between the two groups were compared and analyzed.Results:?1?A total of 467 subjects?289 males and 178 females?aged over60 years old were examined, with an average age of 68.8±8.68 years old, including 325 subjects?203 males and 122 females?aged 6069 years old,111subjects?68 males and 43 females?aged 7079 years old,and 31 subjects?18males and 13 females?aged 80 and over 80 years old. There were 25 subjects?16males and 9 females?in the positive group, with an average age of 76.08±8.59years old, including 7 subjects?4 males and 3 females?aged 6069 years old,11subjects?7 males and 4 females?aged 7079 years old,and 7 subjects?5 males and 2 females?aged 80 and over 80 years old.Among all the subjects who underwent orbital CT examination in our hospital, the incidence of scleral calcification was 5.3%for those aged over 60 years old, among which the incidence of calcification was 2.2%for those aged 6069 years old,9.9%for those aged 7079 years old,and 22.6%for those aged 80 and over 80 years old.?2?There were 25 subjects?29 eyes?in the positive group, and 45 calcified scleral plaques in the 29 eyes,4 subjects of which have calcified scleral plaques in the both of eyes, they were all anterior to the insertion of the internal and the external rectus muscles.21 subjects of which have calcified scleral plaques in the single eye, among them,8 subjects scleral plaques were anterior to the insertion of the internal and external rectus muscles,9 subjects calcified scleral plaques were anterior to the insertion of the internal rectus muscles, and 4subjects scleral plaques were anterior to the insertion of the external rectus muscles. There were 25 calcified scleral plaques were anterior to the insertion of the internal rectus muscles, the proportion is 55.6%,and the rest of the subjects calcified scleral plaques were anterior to the insertion of the external rectus muscles, the proportion is 44.4%.?3?the horizontal diameter of the scleral plaque was 1.5mm4mm,with an average value of 2.89±0.70mm,and the vertical diameter of the scleral plaque was 2mm6mm,with an average value of4.36±0.96mm.?4?The CT value of the scleral plaque was 160353Hu,with an average value of 237±49Hu.?5?In the positive group and the negative group, the average value of the serum calcium concentration, serum phosphorus concentration, serum total cholesterol concentration, serum total triglycerides concentration, serum glucose concentration and blood pressure were all within the normal range. There was no statistical difference in the serum total cholesterol concentration?t=-0.119,P=0.907>0.05?,serum total triglycerides concentration?t=0.541,P=0.596>0.05?,serum glucose concentration?t=-1.735,P=0.091>0.05?and blood pressure?systolic blood pressure t=-0.632,P=0.531>0.05,diastolic blood pressure t=-0.496,P=0.623>0.05?between the positive group and the negative group. But there was significant statistical difference in the serum calcium concentration?t=2.323,P=0.026<0.05?and serum phosphorus concentration?t=2.214,P=0.033<0.05?between the positive group and the negative group. The average value concentration of the serum calcium was 2.328±0.171 mmol/L in the positive group,2.198±0.176mmol/L in the negative group. And the average value concentration of serum phosphorus was 1.158±0.263 mmol/L in the positive group,1.013±0.149mmol/L in the negative group,The serum calcium concentration and the serum phosphorus concentration in the positive group were higher than those in the negative group.Conclusion:?1?Among the subjects who underwent orbital CT examination in our hospital, the incidence of scleral calcification was 5.3%in subjects over60 years old, with the increase of the age,the incidence is increasing.?2?The most common place for the calcified senile scleral plaque where it occurs is anterior to the insertion of the internal rectus muscles. The scleral plaque presents a quasi-oval high-density shadow on CT,and the vertical diameter of scleral plaque is longer than the horizontal diameter.?3?The concentrations of serum calcium and serum phosphorus in calcified senile scleral plaque patients were within the normal range, but all of them were higher than those without calcified senile scleral plaque, scleral calcification in those with calcified senile scleral plaque patients may be related to the high concentrations of serum calcium and serum phosphorus, but have no relation with serum total cholesterol concentration, serum total triglycerides concentration, serum glucose concentration and blood pressure.
