ObjectiveThe study aimed to explore the current situation of the health practice ability,self-care ability and quality of life in the elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. To investigate the relationship between health practice ability,self-care ability and quality of life, which can provide elderly patients with benign prostatic in hospital a scientific evidence for the health education and to improve their quality of life.MethodsA convenience sampling survey was conducted in urology departments of a tertiary first-class hospital in Jinzhou from April 2017 to December 2018.A total of 253 elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia received a questionnaire survey. The general demographic data, the Chinese version of the self-rated abilities for health practices scale, the Chinese version of the appraisal of the self-care agency-revised and the revised version of quality of life scale for benign prostatic hyperplasia patient were used.Data entry was performed using SPSS21.0 software and descriptive analysis,t-test,analysis of variance,Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed. The AMOS22.0 and Bootstrap methods were used to test the mediation effect model.Results1?The score of SRAHP was(58.29±11.039).The score index of health behavior was 52.0%,which was in the middle level. The health behavior in the effects of various demographic data: Different age groups, marital status, culture degree, monthly income, residence and duration of BPH of the SRAHP score difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05).2?The score of ASAS-R-C was(48.84±7.391).The self-care ability in the effects of various demographic data: Different age groups, culture degree, monthly income and residence of the ASAS-R-C score difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05).3?The score of BPHQLS was(98.36±15.790).The score index of quality of life was 61.5%,which was in the middle level. The quality of life in the effects of various demographic data: Different age groups, culture degree, monthly income and duration of BPH of the BPHQLS score difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05).4?There was a positive correlation between SRAHP and ASAS-R-C score(r=0.469,P<0.01);SRAHP was positively correlated with BPHQLS(r=0.498,P<0.01);ASAS-R-C was positively correlated with BPHQLS(r=0.474,P<0.01).5?Simple linear regression analysis showed that self-care ability has a predictive effect on quality of life(?=0.394,t=6.755,P<0.001),self-care ability has a predictive effect on health practice(?=0.274,t=5.361,P<0.001);multiple linear regression analysis showed that self-care ability and health practice had predictive effects on quality of life(self-care ability: ?=0.311,t=5.221,P<0.001;health practice: ?=0.304,t=4.345,P<0.001)).6?Based on the structural path model, the direct effect of self-care ability on health practice was 0.536,the direct effect of health practice on quality of life was 0.490,the direct effect of self-care ability on quality of life was 0.301,and the value of mediating effect of self-care ability on quality of life was 0.262,and the proportion of mediation was 46.5%(0.262/0.563).Conclusions1.The health practice of elderly BPH patients was in the middle level;the level of self-care ability was low;the quality of life was in the middle level.2.Elderly BPH patients with older age, widowed, lower educational level, lower monthly income, rural areas and long duration of illness have poor health behavior.Elderly BPH patients with lower educational level, lower monthly income and rural areas have poor self-care ability.Elderly BPH patients with lower educational level, lower monthly income and long duration of illness have poor quality of life.3.There was positive correlation between the score of self-care ability, health practice and quality of life.Self-care ability was significant predict factor of health practice and quality of life, health practice were significant predict factors of quality of life.4.Self-care ability played an indirect effect on the quality of life by the mediating effect of health practice among the elderly BPH patients. This study also suggested that medical institutions should take steps to enhance self-care ability and health practice for improving the quality of life in the BPH patients.
