Objective To investigate the potential effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS)on sleep quality and mood status in a group of METH/Heroin addicts. Methods Total 105 male addicts were randomly divided into 10 Hz intervention(n=40).sham stimulation(n=40)and control group(n=25).Intervention and sham group received 10 Hz rTMS at 100%RMT applied over left DLPFC for 10 minutes, but sham group rotated coil 90 degrees.Five sessions of rTMS stimulation were administrated for 6 consecutive weeks. There was no intervention for control group.Pittsburgh Sleep Index Inventory(PSQI),Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS)were assessed prior to and after the 6 weeks of intervention. Results After 6 weeks of intervention,PSQI score(10.95vs 8.03,p<0.001),SAS score(56.60 vs 50.15,p<0.001)and SDS score(63.80 vs 54.68.p<0.001)in rTMS group were significantly lower than those before treatment. However,There were no significant changes amoung the pseudo-stimulation group and the control group. There were significant differences between rTMS group, sham stimulation group and control group with regard to PSQI(8.03±0.83,12.68±1.19,12.08±1.38,F=59.79,p<0.001),SAS(50.15±3.29,57.90±5.47,58.16±6.92,F=79.92,p<0.001)and SDS(54.68±3.58.62.30±5.14,62.41±6.21.F=58.52,p<0.001)after six weeks intervention. Conclusion Six weeks rTMS can improve sleep quality, depression and anxiety of METH/Heroin drug addicts.
