Objective:As to anatomy and physiology, there are lots of similarities between human and minipigs.Due to the lack of basic data of minipigs as an animal model of reproductive toxicity,we did the Bama minipigs in embryo-fetal development toxicity study to obtain these data.We intend to expand the range of selecting non-rodents and provide new ideas for nonclinical reproductive toxicity study. Methods:Pregnant minipigs were sacrificed respectively during different gestation period. The examinations included necropsy, count of corporea lutea and live and dead implantations, fetal body weight, and external, visceral, and skeletal examination of fetuses. Results:The visceral and skeletal system of the 30-day-old embryos of Bama minipigs had not been developed, the appearance can not distinguish between gender. The main organs, skulls and trunk bones of the 40-day-old embryos of Bama minipigs had been developed and shaped, which can distinguish between gender in appearance. The basic data of Bama minipigs, such as body weight, fetal development, and fetal malformation/variation,were obtained. Conclusions:Bama minipig might be a good alternative animal model for nonclinical reproductive toxicity study. We obtained the reproductive parameters of pregnant minipigs and the indexes of fetal development, which can provide valuable reference data for embryo-fetal developmental toxicity test of Bama minipigs.
