Objective: Predicting the survival length for terminally cancer patients is very important in the field of palliative care, which will help physicians and nurses to make clinical decisions. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between Palliative Prognostic Index(PPI)and the survival time of advanced gastric cancer patients who received palliative care in our hospital in order to guide clinical practice. Methods: We analyzed the clinical data of 63 dead patients, which were treated in the Department of Palliative Care,Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from January in 2014 to September in 2017.The Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were used to examine the univariate analysis about the association between PPI and survival.Sensitivity and specificity were calculated between different survival length of groups and different prognostic indexes. Results: Karnofsky performance score,PPI and its associated three components were found to be significantly related with the survival according to log-rank test(P < 0.05).Sensitivity and specificity were 65.5% and 87.5%(three weeks as cut-off point),and they were 76.7% and 57.6% when one week was considered as cut-off point. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicated the significant relationship between PPI and survival in gastric cancer patients.PPI can be used to provide the basis about predicting the survival length of cancer patients, but its components and evaluation standards should be further investigated.
