Objective: To analyze the economic burden of myopia in Kunming and Dali of Yunnan province, and to put forward the key points and intervention directions of relevant diseases. Methods: To define the spherical equivalent(Spherical Equivalent,SE)degreerange for the diagnosis of myopia, and to carry out accounting combined with the health cost and disease burden.A random cluster sampling survey of primary, junior, high school and university in Kunming and Dali of Yunnan Province was carried out, each of which included more than 2 schools and at least one class per grade. All the students in the class were included in the survey, including myope and non-myope.For students from primary to high school, the situation of both students and their parents were included. For college students,we only investigate the situation of the students themselves. The primary and middle school questionnaire includes three parts: children and parents. The college student questionnaire only includes the individual part. The questionnaire involved myopia degree, wearing glasses, diagnosis and treatment, myopia prevention and control measures, myopia surgery, family basic information and so on.Results: 8500 questionnaires were sent out,8183 were recovered, and the recovery rate was 96.27%.A total of 7688 subjects aged between 6 and 50 were identified as valid, with an effective rate of 90.45%.In 7688 subjects, the ratio of male to female was 1: 1.1,with an average age of 33(±23)years old.The prevalence of myopia was 30.32%.The average initial age of myopia was 12(±4)years old.Among the patients with myopia,87.82%(1865)selected frame glasses for myopiacorrection. The average age of first wear was 15(±6)years old,and the average cost of purchasing a pair of frame glasses was 550(±500)yuan.2.79%(65)underwent myopia correction with OK Lens(Orthokeratology Lens,OK Lens)or RGP(Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens,RGP).The average age of initial wear was 13(±4)years old,and the average cost of purchasing a pair of OK Lens or RGP was 5500(±4000)yuan.The average monthly expenditure on nursing fluid and eye fluid was125(±175)yuan.8.15%(190)wear ordinary contact lenses for correction of myopia. The average age of initial wear was 20(±5)years old,and the average monthly expenditure on contact lenses, care fluid and eye fluid was 60(±110)yuan.2.49%(58)chose myopia surgery, the average cost was 8,000(±5,000)yuan,and the average absent days for study or work was 7(±28).Frame glasses are the cheapest and least burdensome correction way for myopia patients. Most myopia patients choose frame glasses to correct myopia. In the past year, the average cost of myopia among myopia patients was 273.33(±651.67)yuan.In the past year, myopia patients in primary and middle schools have spent 500(±1500)yuan on hospital diagnosis and treatment for various diseases, and 363.64(±950.00)yuan on myopia per capita. The cost of myopia accounts for 72.73% of the total cost of hospital diagnosis and treatment. The annual average direct economic burden of myopia in Kunming and Dali of Yunnan Province is 668 million yuan, and the annual indirect economic burden is about 20.32 million yuan. Conclusions: The prevalence rate of myopia in Kunming and Dali of Yunnan Province is 30.32%.The average annual cost of myopia among myopia patients was273.33 yuan. The annual direct and indirect economic burden of myopia are about 668 million yuan and 20.32 million yuan respectively. The annual direct and indirect economic burden of myopia in Yunnan Province are about 3.10 billion and 87.24 million yuan. The social economic losses of Yunnan Province is about 344.17 billion yuan.It is difficult for people with myopia in poverty counties of Yunnan to bear the costs associated with myopia. The direct economic burden of myopic surgery is greater than that of lens correction. Our country is a country suffered from seriousmyopia, with a large number of myopic people, the economic burden caused by myopia is huge, but the research on direct economic burden and social economic loss of diagnosis and treatment of myopia still lacks, and the understanding of myopia is insufficient. Our government should understand the current situation of myopia correctly and formulate relevant public policies to cope with the prevalence of myopia.
