China is experiencing urbanization at an unparalleled pace, and the country's rapid urbanization has important consequences for population health.Using census and statistical data, this paper analyzes the spatial-temporal characternistics and relationships between urbanization and population health in China, based on entropy method, spatial autocorrelation and spatial Durbin model. The main results are as follows:(1)From 1990 to 2010,the urbanization index ofprovincial and cities at prefecture level annual increased by 17.67 and 5.43 percentage points respectively. The difference of urbanization development at provincial level has greatly reduced, while its at municipal level has expanded. The spatial pattern of urbanization development type regions, the eastern region is higher than the western region. The characterristics of urbanization development speed at provincial level, the western region higher than the eastern region, while its at municipal level shows the opposite mode.Regions with high urbanization index are mainly distributed in the Yangtze River Delta,Pearl River Delta,Bohai Rim region and provincial capital cities.Urbanization development shows a significant positive spatial autocorrelation and obvious spatial dependence.2000 is an important turning point in the development of urbanization in China.(2)From 1990 to 2010,the population heath index of provincial and prefecture-level increased by 3%and 0.82%annually,respectively.The regionl difference of population health index presented a reducing trend. The level of population health decreases from the east to central region then to the west, but its growing speed is the opposite situation.Located in plain and developed regions with high population health index, while the population health index is low in mountainous and underdeveloped regions. The level of population health shows a significant positive spatial aotocorrelation and obvious spatial dependence, its spatial pattern presented "the east is hot spot but the west is cold spot".(3)There is a significant positive aotocorrelation between urbanization and population health in China. The development of urbanization in China not only has a positive effect on the improvement of people's health of the province, and but also has a positive spillover effect on population health of the neighboring provinces. The urbanization index increased by 1%,the population health index of the province will increase by 0.54%.Indirect effect of urbanization(0.45%)was significantly larger than its direct effect(0.09%).The level of people's health could generate positive spatial spillover effects and spatial interaction.China should implement city planning for health promotion, which guide residents to choose a healthy lifestyle and promote the continuous improvement of people's health.
