Objective: our study, for the first time, evaluated the validity and reliability of the Sleep Disorder Short-Form Scale in cancer patients to confirm its feasibility in our hospital. Methods: Part one: The study was conducted among 227 medical students from Guangxi Medical University, the SDSF were administered in all subjects, and these students completed the SDSF after 1 week, again.Part two: A total of 215 patients with cancer from Cancer Hospital of Guangxi Medical University were recruited, including 130 with head and neck cancers and 85 with other cancers. The Sleep Disturbance Short-Form Scale(SDSF)and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)were administered in all subjects, and patients with radiotherapy also completed the SDSF after 1 week.Part three: A total of 39 NPC patients from Department of Radiation Oncology treated with primary IMRT and concurrent chemotherapy.PSQI and SDSF were administered in all subjects during radiotherapy,at the same time 30 patients was collected heart rate variability(HRV)on the ambulatory digital Holter electrocardiogram(ECG).Results: Part one: The mean SDSF score for the medical students were 48.43±6.19?48.16±6.96,respectively,in the first and second week. The SDSF shows good construct validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability.Part two: the mean PSQI score of patients with head and neck cancer was 8.87±3.52 higher than other cancer's mean score significantly(P < 0.05).The SDSF shows good construct validity, criterion validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability.Part three: The NPC patients got higher scores of PSQI and SDSF after radiotherapy than before treatment(P<0.05).The degree of sleep disturbance was increased with the radiological dose rising(P<0.05);the values of LF and total power after treatment were lower than before treatment(P < 0.05),while the value of HR and HF were higher than before(P>0.05).Conclusions: SDSF shows good construct validity, criterion validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability both in normal person and cancer patients,Compared with the function of autonomic nervous system before IMRT,the sleep disturbance degree of NPC patients can be increased during IMRT and after it,and the function of autonomic nervous system are increased, too.so our study generalize the SDSF as atool to assess the quality of sleep in patients with cancer and normal person.
