Objective:To investigate the changes of plasma galectin-3 levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS),and its relationship to sex hormones, glucolipid metabolism, inflammation factors and insulin resistance.Methods:108 subjects were enrolled in this study, and all PCOS patients were newly diagnosed PCOS women. These subjects were divided into four groups, namely non-obese PCOS group(PCOS1 group,n=34,BMI<25kg/m2),obese PCOS group(PCOS2 group,n=32,BMI>25kg/m2),pure obese group which age and BMI matched with PCOS2(OB,n=21),normol control group(CON,n=21).And BMI?WHR?FPG?2hPG?HbA1c?FINS?2hINS?Sex hormones and lipid parameters were determined. The status of insulin resistance was assessed by homeostasis model assessment(HOMA)and insulin sensitivity index(ISI).Levels of plasma galectin-3 and IL-6 were detected by ELISA.Results:(1)The plasma level of galectin-3 was significantly higher in PCOS group than that of CON and OB group(all P<0.05),Moreover,the level of galectin-3 was also higher in OB group compared with CON group, while galectin-3 in PCOS2 group was higher in comparison of PCOS1 group(all P<0.05).(2)After Age.BMI and WHR adjusted, pearson correlation showed that the level of Galectin-3 was positive correlated with FPG?2hPG?FINS?HOMA-IR?hs-CRP and IL-6,but negatively correlated with ISI.(3)A multiple linear regression analysis showed plasma galectin-3 concentrations were independently associated with interleukin-6(IL-6),HOMA-IR and BMI(all P<0.05).Conclusion:The level of plasma galectin-3 was significantly higher in patients with obesity or PCOS,and which also higher in obese women with PCOS than that in non-obese women with PCOS.Plasma galectin-3 closely associated with glucose, metabolism, inflammation.and insulin resistance, which suggests galectin-3 may be involved in the pathomechanism of PCOS.
