The subtrochanteric fracture of the femur is a common type of fracture in the orthopedics. The incidence of this type of fracture has a bimodal trend, often occurring in younger adults and elderly people.Because here is located at the junction of cancellous bone and cortical bone, the surrounding muscles are more attached, resulting in larger fracture displacement, which leads to delayed healing,non-healing and other adverse outcomes in some patients. At present, there are different concepts for surgical treatment of subtrochanteric femoral fractures.Closed reduction does not destroy the blood supply at the fracture end,but usually it cannot be anatomically reset and increases the risk of poor postoperative prognosis.Open reduction usually results in better reduction, but fractured blood flow is disrupted and the risk of postoperative nonunion increases. At present, there are also many kinds of mainstream treatment, including intramedullary and extramedullary surgical fixation. This article summarizes the current status of surgical treatment of subtrochanteric fractures of the femur.
