Objective: Despite advances improvements in surveillance, prevention, and vaccination programs in industrialized countries,Bordetella pertussis infection is still circulating.Pertussis can be critical for newborn infants' population. It is often unrecognized;some features should guide clinicians to suspect pertussis, but clinical suspicion has a low sensitivity.Individuals close to the infants are the main source of infection. There is a great need to review ways to improve the current vaccines efficacy.Method: We Performed an extensive search through Pub Med,Pub Med Central, and Medline databases and retrieved 10-year-old literatures eligible for our review study.Result and conclusion: The systematic use of Real-time polymerase chain reaction is highly recommended to confirm the diagnosis of pertussis in infants hospitalized with acute respiratory symptoms. We also revised the proposed strategies and follow up on its implementation and offered recommendations. Our understanding of immunological mechanisms has dissected the disease pathophysiology and provided various insights on how to improve vaccines efficacy.
