Electroencephalogram(EEG)is a type of signals with chaotic characteristics. In this study we investigated the subjects’ emotional changes by analyzing their EEG using the permutation entropy(PE)method when they were looking at different images or listen different music. These images and music were intended to evoke different emotional states, and we focused on studying the differences between male and female in the change of EEG complexity in the alpha and beta wave range. The objective of this study is to further understand the emotional change induced by different materials. This is of great importance for understanding the behavior recognition and the cognition process of brain in different emotional states.Based on our analysis using the PE method we found that in the emotional visual stimulation experiment, the alpha wave data indicated that subjects were more easily affected by negative emotion, and EEG complexity was higher when they were looking at negative images than positive images. We also discovered that the alpha wave data obtained at occipital lobe were more significant compared to data at parietal lobe.In terms of the change of complexity, the alpha wave data from female were more significant than data from male, and female subjects were more easily affected by negative emotion. In the emotional auditory stimulation experiment, the complexity was higher when the subjects were listening to light music than noise one.In the beta wave range of the emotional visual stimulation experiment we discovered that for female the beta wave data obtained at parietal lobe were more significant compared to data at frontal lobe, whereas for male the beta wave data obtained at frontal lobe were better.Other phenomena are consistent with the alpha wave.In the emotional auditory stimulation experiment, the beta wave data are consistent with the alpha wave too.
