Objective: Analyze the research status of traditional Yao medicine based on statistics of research papers in Chinese journal databases, thus providing references for the development of traditional Yao medicine.Methods:(1)Bibliometric Methods: Conduct statistical analysis on publication years, authors, institutions, source regions, source journals and fund support of the research papers.(2)Content Analysis: Classify the research papers by contents, analyze the papers of fundamental, laboratory and clinical research on traditional Yao medicine respectively.(3)Comparative Study: Make comparisons between traditional Yao medicine and traditional Dong medicine in view of research papers, thereby analyze the research status.Results:(1)488 research papers published from 1983 to 2017 on traditional Yao medicine are retrieved in three major Chinese journal databases: CNKI,Wanfang Data and CQVIP.The annual number of papers fluctuated at low level from 1983 to 2009,while it rose rapidly from 2010 to 2014 and reached its peak in 2014(63 papers).Since 2015,the number has seen a slight decline, but still remains above 50.(2)The research papers have 837 authors in total, among them are 91 core authors. The research cooperation rate is 84.02%.The average number of authors per paper rises with time going on.(3)93 institutions contribute to the research papers, among them are 8 core institutions.Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine is the institution with the largest number of published papers(82 papers).(4)The research papers originate from 13 provincial districts, while Guangxi contributes to 76.02% of them.(5)The research papers come from 155 journals, including 31 core journals of China.20.90% of the papers are indexed in core journals of China.(6)The fund support rate of the research papers is 30.12%,which is lower than average. In recent years, the number of funded papers is rising.(7)Classify the research papers by contents, basic research occupies 37.91%,laboratory research 34.84%,while clinical research only 27.25%.(8)Systematic reviews account for the highest percentage in the fundamental research of traditional Yao medicine, while studies on history and literature are reported less.(9)Yao herbal medicine is the main laboratory research target of traditional Yao medicine.97 kinds of Yao herbal medicine, including 51 classical ones are studied in the research papers, which belong to 47 families and 74 genuses in plant taxonomy.(10)The clinical research of traditional Yao medicine focus more on digestive diseases, gynecologic and obstetric diseases, rheumatic diseases and orthopedic diseases. The adoption rate of contrast approaches is rising.Only 15.79% clinical research papers adopt traditional diagnostic methods. On average, the revised Jadad score of randomized controlled trials(RCTs)is 1.20±0.73,the high-quality studies account for only 3.03%.The CONSORT 2010 score is 9.21±3.65,which is below domestic average.(11)Research papers on traditional Yao medicine have advantages over traditional Dong medicine ones on quantities, cooperation rate, fund support rate and indexed rate by core journals of China. Conclusions:Guangxi Autonomous Region plays a dominant role in the research on traditional Yao medicine. The research status of traditional Yao medicine has improved significantly in recent years and comes ahead of traditional Dong medicine at present.Relatively stable research groups have been established. However, problems still exist in the research on traditional Yao medicine: the research level is relatively low in general, the research lacks features and the research is not closely integrated with clinical applications. These problems need to be improved.
