Non-timber forest products(NTFPs)plays an important role in a mountainous household's livelihood in the Northern provinces of Vietnam.Bac Giang is a province depending on NTFPs with the total forest area of 110,000 hectares. However, there are only a small number of researches on NTFPs in Vietnam as well as in Bac Giang province.Hence, this study is aiming to identify the major NTFPs of Bac Giang forest that the households collect and utilize, determine factors affecting household income derived from NTFPs as well as the determinants influencing households' decision in the collection of NTFPs in Bac Giang province,Vietnam. We conducted to systematically collect secondary data at the Department of of Agriculture and Rural development,Department of of Natural Resources and Environment,Department of Statistics, etc.in Bac Giang province and find out the situation of NTFPs exploitation and utilization of local people in the study area.To collect primary data, field investigation and questionnaire survey were conducted, nine villages were sampled from three districts and 390 households were randomly chosen by using proportional-to-size techniques based on the quantity of farm households in each village. To describe the situation of society as well as economy of the NTFPs collectors including family size, age, education, employment in diverse sectors, and household income of the experimental area, etc.as well as NTFPs resources that households exploit and utilize, descriptive statistics were used.In addition, two types of regression analyses were undertaken. In the first analysis,a logistic regression model was developed to explore the key determinants of the livelihoods' collection of NTFPs.We identified the significant explanatory variables to NTFPs collection decision are gender of household head-SEX(+),being native to the local area-NATIVE(+),distance from home to forest-DISFOR(-)and total land holding-LANDHOL(-).In the second analysis, factors affecting income derived from NTFPs were estimated by using a multiple linear regressions model. The area of land holding, distance from home to the market and forest had a significant negative effect on the probability of farmers to collect NTFPs and increase their income(P<0.01).The size of the family and age of the household head were significantly positive correlation(P<0.05),which affected the collection range of NTFPs,and then affected the total income derived from NTFPs of local households in Bac Giang province,Vietnam.
