| Objective: Feline gingivitis-stomatitis-pharyngitis complex(GSPC)is a common disease in clinical practice. It is an inflammatory syndrome affecting the mouths of cats. The presenting clinical signs of GSPC are symptomatic of the pain and inflammation in the mouth, and include dysphagis(sometimes anorexia),weight loss, halitosis, ptyalism(sometimes blood-stained),pawing at the mouch and reduced grooming.Apart from inflammation associated with periodontal disease, which has been recognised with a very high prevalence in cats, inflmmatory lesions have been identified in cats in two specific unusual anatomical sites: the mucosa lateral to the palatoglossal arches and the alveolar mucosa in the premolar/molar area, sometimes extending to the buccal mucosa. The pharynx and the soft palate may also be involved, and(less commonly)the hard palate and the tongue.GSPC can be very debilitating, difficult to treat, and sometimes results in euthanasia of the affected cat.System examinations to diagnose GSPC are listed in this study. And also 5 different treatment plans were compared to find the best way to control GSPC,offer sick cats a better life.Materials and methods: Sixty cats of different age, breed and gender with typical symptons, were diagnosed with GSPC were randomized into 5 groups.G1(Antibiotics),G2(Antibiotics & Dexamethasone),G3(Antibiotics & Megestrol),G4(Antibiotics & Feline recombinant interferon Omega)and G5(Antibiotics & Molars extraction).Antibiotic was chosen as Amoxy Clav(12.5mg/kg).During the treatment period, owners should only feed their cats specific dry food(Royal Canine Oral Care for cat),no extra any other kind food or treats. Also they should avoid all kinds of environment changes. Most important, give medicine according to the instruction and recheck with the vet on time.Cats were observed during a 10 weeks period. All animals were examined eight times: on D0,Week1,Week2,Week4,Week6,Week8,Week10.On D0,Week2,Week4,Week8,Week10,the cat’s body weight was registered and the following clinical examinatons were performed for efficacy assessment. The behaviour was evaluated on four parameters scored on a scale of 0-3: inappetence, pain on food intake or when yawning, hypersalivation and reduced activity. The signs associated with GSPC were assessed by scoring three parameters: pain on opening of cat’s mouth by the veterinarian(0-3 scale),halitosis and/or thickening of the saliva(0-2 scale)as well as enlargement of mandibular lymph nodes(0-2 scale). For all these parameters,a score of 0 was normal and a higher score was synonymous with worsening of the condition. The specific inflammatory lesions of GSPC were evaluated by scoring three parameters: caudal stomatitis intensity(0-4 scale),alveolar/buccal mucositis(0-4 scale)and area of the caudal stomatitis lesions(0-6 scale).Response to treatment, classified as worseing, lacking response, moderate improvement, marked improvement or complete cure,as well as general and local tolerance of treatments, were assessed by both investigaors and owners.Overall treatment groups by reporting at the end of the study whether the oral administration of the solution was easily handled or not.Categorical data were compared between treatment groups using a X2 test. The threshold of significance for all statistical analyses was fixed at α=0.05.Results: G1(Antibiotics)— 83.3% of the patients were better when they were taking the medicine, but their condition got worse pretty first after medicine stoped. On Week8 all the cats(100%)were worseing than before or didn’t even react to the medicine。G2(Antibiotics & Dexamethasone):91.6% of the patients got better.G3(Antibiotics & Megestrol): 66.6% of the patients got better.G4(Antibiotics & Feline recombinant interferon Omega): 66.6% of the patients got improved..G5(Antibiotics & Molars extraction): 75% of the patients got better. Conclusions: The results of this study shows only use antibiotics is not working so good in cases of GSPC,the symptoms comes back quite fast and cats start suffering after stop the antibiotics.Steroid works the best and fastest.Dental extraction has been shown to provide the best long-term improvement in cat because of no any side effect from taking medicines.Megestrol and INF Omega gets nearly the same efficacy, but INF Omega has less side effect than Megestrol. |
