Before the artificial reefs are put into operation, the bottoms of the sea areas are required to be scrutinized. The situation of the bottoms determines whether the reefs can be kept stable in seawater, not to be displaced, sunk, and how deep of subsidence(if ever sinks). The distribution and bearing capacity of sediment are the key to site selection. In this paper, experimental treatment was performed on the sediment collected from the columnar bottom mud and the sea surface of the Ma'an Archipelago in the vicinity of the island reef. The type and distribution of sediments near the reefs were discussed, and the water content, natural density, grain size and other physics of the sediment were analyzed. The correlation between the characteristics and penetration strength and shear strength, combined with the large-scale survey results of the surface mud in the sea area of the Ma'an Archipelago, discusses the distribution and bearing capacity of the sediments in the sea area of the Ma'an Archipelago, and the suitability of the sediments in the sea area.An assessment was made. The research results are as follows:1.The column bottom muds collected near the reefs on the islands of Ma'an Archipelago were subjected to experimental treatment. The grain size analysis showed that the types of sediments were mainly sandy silt, silt, and clay silt, and they were dominated by silty-grained suspended sediments.Correlation analysis of physical properties such as particle size, moisture content, and natural density with penetration strength and shear strength showed that there was a linear positive correlation between silt content, clay content and penetration strength, shear strength of the bottom mud near the reef, and their correlation coefficient is-0.67 and-0.64,respectively.In the area near the Saddle Isles Reef, where the water content of the sediment, the smaller the sand content, and the higher the silt content, the greater the shear strength of the soil, the more suitable for the reef.2.The analysis of surface sediment particle size collected on the large surface of the Sea of Ma'an Archipelago shows that clay silt, silt, and sandy silt are the main parts of the western part of the sea area of the Ma'an Archipelago, silty sand and sandy silt are mainly present in the eastern part of the sea.The water content in the sea area of the Saddle Islands has a highly linear negative correlation with the natural density and the median diameter(|r|>0.8).The porosity ratio is significantly negatively correlated with the median grain size and the natural density(|r|>0.7).In the sea areas where there are mainly made of sand east of Ma'an Archipelago, the natural density of the sediments has a great influence on the bearing capacity. The sand content of the bottoms is inversely proportional to the water content, and its bearing capacity. The bearing capacity depends mainly on the friction and biting of sand.3.The higher the silt content in the sea area of the Saddle Islands, the greater the shear strength and the greater the cohesion of the bottoms, and the shear strength determines the bearing capacity.A linear regression equation was established between the water content of the surface sediments and silt.Sand and clay in the surface survey of the sea area of the Saddleback Islands. The linear correlation between the moisture content of the columnar sediments and the shear strength of the columnar sediments near the island reef was obtained. The distribution characteristics of shear strength in the Ma'an Archipelago area provide scientific basis for the construction of artificial reefs.
