The great heritage site embodies the common values of history, reality, nature and humanity. The protection of the great heritage site has gradually become the focus of the world cultural heritage protection.Since the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,General Secretary Xi Jinping and other party and state leaders have made a series of important instructions and instructions on the protection of China’s cultural heritage.Large sites are large in scale, diverse in types, rich in content, great in value and difficult to protect. In the new era,new technologies and software such as 3D laser scanning technology and UAV tilt photography technology provide new technical means for the digital preservation of large sites. The 3D digitization of large sites is taken as the research object. The key technologies and methods of large sites from digital acquisition, data processing, data application to the process of 3D realistic modeling are summarized from by studying the domestic and foreign digital modeling methods of large sites and successful modeling restoration examples. The characteristics and digital difficulties of the ruins of the Guge Kingdom are analyzed based on the actual situation.Multi-source data such as the remote sensing image, main building size and plan data,three-dimensional scanning data,UAV tilt photography image data, etc are used and processed with the corresponding processing software, and finally showed in the powerful function of ArcGIS Pro to realize the three-dimensional digitization of the ruins of the Guge Kingdom. The feasibility of the method in this paper in the practice of three-dimensional digitization of large sites is proved by the success of the experiment. Also the Different data collection methods,multi-source data processing methods,multi-source data application platform for different parts of the site, problems and the solutions summarized in this paper can provide method reference and practical experience for three-dimensional digital images of similar large sites in Tibet and other areas with complex terrain and serious occlusion.
