Laminated Veneer Bamboo(LVB)could be a promising material when it comes to high-rised buildings where often frame structures are adopted, and the performance of a LVB frame structure is largely influenced by the behavior of its connections. In timber structures, connections loaded by a bending moment are prone to be governed by splitting failure. It is assumed that connection design and theories used for timber structures can also be applied in LVB structures. For this research LVB bolted joints with slotted-in steel plate are considered. This research will focus itself on the splitting load-carrying capacity and failure mechanism of LVB bolted connections with slotted-in steel plate loaded perpendicular to the fiber direction. The main work and its results are as follows:(1)The fracture parameter of LVB and yield moment of bolts for splitting load-carrying capacity prediction of LVB connections loaded perpendicular to grain were determined.(2)Splitting load-carrying capacity tests were conducted with the effect of load edge distance and end distance of the bolts considered.Test results were compared with predictions of van der Put model,Jensen model and European Yield Model, and van der Put model was proved to be a better model here.Besides, displacement of connections and bolts and displacement and strain of joint surfaces were analyzed, therewith failure mechanism of LVB bolted connections with slotted-in steel plate loaded perpendicular to grain was revealed.(3)Shear tests with different spacing of bolts were conducted to investigate the effect of spacing and number of bolts on shear capacity of the joints.Displacement of connections and bolts were analyzed, and then failure mechanism of bolted joints loaded perpendicular to grain under the condition of different spacing of bolt was revealed.(4)Shear tests of perpendicularly loaded bolted joints with reinforcement using vertical prestressed bolts and vertical self-tapping screw were conducted to investigate effect of the reinforcement methods on bolted joints with different load edge distance and end distance of bolts, test results were compared with joints without reinforcement.Displacement of connections and bolts and displacement and strain of joint surfaces were analyzed, and effect of vertical prestressed bolts and vertical self-tapping screw on bolted joints loaded perpendicular to the fiber direction was revealed accordingly.(5)Based on tests results, geometrical arrangement principle of bolts, method for load-carrying capacity prediction and effect of reinforcement for bolted joints loaded perpendicular to grain were formulated.
