A Study On The Urban Space Thought Of Mumford From The Perspective Of Phenomenology

Lewis Mumford(1895-1990)is known as the “greatest urbanist” of the 20 th century.A holistic study of Mumford's urban space thought from the perspective of phenomenology shows its profound humanism.Mumford described the cities as containers,which has been altering during different periods of time.The main body of this paper consists of six chapters,mainly from the following three aspects.First,criticizing Mumford's urban space thought from the technical dimension of modernity and capital dimension.The evolution of modern urban space is driven by technology and capital,while the development of capitalism has accelerated the progress of technology,and the dual influence of capital and technology has made cities lose their diversity.How to rationally plan urban space has become the theme of the Times.Second,the city was originally a ceremonial gathering center,and the holy center slipped into the worldly living environment,and then the spiritual space gave its way to the capital space.Thirdly,in Mumford's view,the city serves as a container for human culture,the organizational structure of human society,the memory of society and people's life.City is a container of love,and language becomes the container of urban culture inheritance.Home has become one of the places in the urban space.In the process of continuous human reproduction,a big family with blood relationship as the bond has been formed,and a small family living alone has been formed under the impact of new technology and capital.City is the symbol of people's spiritual love,so the urban space should reflect the humanistic value more.The humanistic spirit value of Mumford urban space should be the precious wealth of the contemporary city,and the storage and continuation of the culture of urban space have become the requirements of the Times.In a word,based on Mumford's classic works,this paper sorts out his urban space thoughts.First,in the context of modernity,cities lose their diversity,urban planning is the same,and capital becomes the theme of cities.Secondly,due to the improvement of human subjectivity,the sacred space is finally secularized and the capital space is further expanded.Thirdly,in the face of abundant capital urban space,Mumford's urban space thought always takes people as the core and establishes the humanistic spirit value of urban space.Modern city development is the inevitable choice of China,realizing China's own urbanization is the need of reality.Faced with the various destructions of mechanization to urban life,Mumford put forward the solutions to urban problems.Mumford's insight and reflective criticism of urban evolution have a profound enlightening effect on China's modern urban construction.
