With the development of industry and increasing demand for fiber composite materials, carbon fiber reinforced composite materials(CFRP)are widely used in modern industrial production. When drilling CFRP laminates, drilling with twist drills is prone to cause delamination damage and other defects,so it is necessary to use appropriate tools for processing. The improved drill, the flat rake face drill, has a special geometry that can effectively remove material. In this paper,CFRP drilling tests are performed using seven flat rank face drills with different geometries and a twist drill. The thrust force, drilling damage and cutting mechanism are studied. In the research process, the method of combining theory with experiment is adopted, and the main contents are as follows:1.The surface morphology of the machined hole is studied. The cutting mechanism under different cutting angles is analyzed, and the morphology of the hole wall is observed, which lays a theoretical foundation for the study of drilling processing.2.In this paper, the drilling results of flat rank face drill and twist drill are compared and analyzed.By comparing the drilling process, thrust force and drilling damage of the two kinds of tools, the difference of drilling performance between the two kinds of tools is studied, and the causes of the difference are analyzed theoretically, which lays a theoretical foundation for the application of flat rank face drill.3.The drilling results of flat rank face drills with different geometry are analyzed. The influence of the change of rake angle on the thrust force and drilling damage is studied, and the wear of the tool after machining is observed, which lays a foundation for optimizing the geometry of the flat rank face drill.
