Research On The Conservation And Renewal Strategy Of Chiang Saen Ancient City In Thailand

With the rapid development of Chiang Saen’s economic construction and the gradual deepening of the urbanization process,people pay more and more attention to the protection and development of Chiang Saen’s ancient city.Chiang Saen has a long history.Located in Southeast Asia,it has a triangular border that crosses into Thailand,Myanmar,and Laos.The total area of Chiang Saen’s ancient city is about 226 hectares.There are 76 pagodas and temples with Chiang Saen architectural characteristics in the area under its jurisdiction.In addition to the ancient city,Chiang Saen also has Chiang Saen port,the nearest Thai port to China.Chiang Saen port has become one of the most important trade channels between China and Thailand on the Lancang Mekong River.This not only provides great convenience for China-Thai trade,but also for China-Thai tourism.In the process of urbanization,the protection and development models have not met the development needs of the ancient city of Chiang Saen.The ancient city of Chiang Saen lacked systematic development and planning protections and could not guide its urban laws and construction regulations.This has caused a series of problems and has destroyed the uniqueness and value of the ancient city of Chiang Saen.For example,historical and cultural blocks are protected in this static mode.The relationship between the historical,cultural blocks and the new developments have been ignored.Residential and commercial buildings are to be demolished for new large-scale construction and transformations.The new buildings are usually built with a modern architectural style which ignores the landscape of the ancient city and causes disharmony.Urban development also brings land use and traffic problems to the ancient city.The main content of this paper is to study the protection strategy of Chiang Saen ancient city through the interpretation and analysis of international theories and excellent cases.Based on the detailed investigation of the current situation,it summarizes the problems and aims to solve the contradiction between the protection and the development of the ancient city of Chiang Saen in Thailand.Principle of Multiplicity and Complementarity mode of the ancient city,Chiang Saen,is applied by three methodes : Small-Scale Step by Step method comes the priority to be applied.The others,Static Protection and Large-Scale Update mode,are brought to help.Lastly,it puts forward a model which is suitable for the protection of Chiang Saen ancient city.
