Inspired by the compound eye of insect,a compound eye type solar concentrator(CESC)is designed for solar energy harvesting.The proposed CESC is a non-imaging system specifically design for the third generation of solar energy harvesting.Two-dimensional solar tracking devices are required such that the solar panels concentrate solar energy on the high concentrating photovoltaic cells.However,these tracking devices tend to be sophisticated which leads to maintenance difficulties.Moreover,these tracking devices themselves require certain amount of electric power consumption.In this work,the CESC is designed as a stationary solar collector to improve the optical efficiency and reduce the waste of solar cell materials in order to save costs.The design and optical performance of the CESC are all conducted by ray tracing.And CESC does not require dynamic solar tracking device in the process of collecting light,collecting light range of 126.87°(-63.435° to +63.435°),which makes it possible to collect light that is directed or diffused on the CESC and to work almost all day.Above all,we can define the geometry efficiency as the ratio of the high-energy light spot to the light-collecting area,which is about 16% by simulation and analysis of the variation refractive index CESC.As a renewable and clean energy source,solar energy has great potential for development.In a variety of ways of using solar energy,light collection and concentration is an important way.It converges large areas of sunlight into small areas for light guidance or solar cell power generation to improve the utilization of solar energy.A new design scheme is proposed for the compound eye type light collector in paper,which is different from the previous design method of the solar concentrator.The compound-eye ray collector is an optical structure that introduces a bionic compound eye structure into a non-imaging system.We study the ability of light concentrating by analyzing the problems in the radiance.After the optical design is completed,different types of compound eye ray collectors are simulated in Tracepro and the performance of the whole process is analyzed.
