Structural pounding between adjacent, insufficiently separated buildings has been repeatedly observed during earthquake. The main factor recognized as a reason for pounding of buildings is usually the difference in dynamic characteristics of adjacent structures.Structural pounding may result in substantial damage or even lead to the total collapse of colliding structures during severe ground motions.Based on the theory of the viscoelasticity, the effectiveness of using polymer shock absorber device to mitigate earthquake-induced pounding between unequal heights buildings is studied in this paper.Main contents of this paper are as follows:(1)A widely used nonlinear pounding model and basic theory of viscoelasticity, including three constitutive model and general form of constitutive relations, are introduced.According to the existing viscoelastic collision model, the formula for calculating the collision force of the flat contact surface is derived.(2)Two widely used collision force tests, including the test of a ball falling on a stationary and the test of pendulum which strikes a stationary rigid barrier, are introduced.Self-made polymer material specimens were subjected to static compression test and low-speed collision test, and compared with numerical simulation results. The results show that the three-parameter viscoelastic model has relatively small errors in the simulation of the collision process of polymer materials.(3)Using the three collision force models mentioned in this paper, the collision response analysis of the adjacent unequal heights buildings was carried out under earthquake.Polymer SAD was applied between adjacent buildings, and its influence on the collision response of adjacent buildings and the parameters were studied. The results show that the application of polymer SAD between adjacent buildings can reduce the peak value of the collision force of the structure and reduce the number of times the structure reaches yield, but it will increase the number of collisions of the structure. The viscoelastic parameters of the material are the key factors affecting the vibration reduction effect of the polymer SAD.For different structures, parameters need to be optimized.(4)Aiming at the energy response of adjacent unequal height building under earthquake, the reduction effect of polymer SAD on the energy response of adjacent buildings under seismic and the parameters are studied. The polymer SAD has a redistribution effect on the energy response of adjacent structures. The structural input energy has a strong sensitivity to seismic waves. When the polymer SAD has suitable parameters,it has a high energy consumption effect on the energy response of adjacent structures under earthquake.
