All-terrain Vehicle is a brand new concept vehicle. It is commonly called all-terrain vehicle in China. It is mainly used in agriculture and military.Due to its high center of mass and small wheelbase, rollover accidents are more likely to occur. The ATV has a special purpose, once its occurrence rollover accident, brings the material loss and the human casualty consequence is inestimable. Therefore, the roll stability has become one of the important performances of the ATV,it is important to study the roll stability of the ATV to improve its performance. This paper first introduces the steering stability term such as body roll angle, lateral acceleration and lateral load transfer rate, compares the advantages and disadvantages of static and dynamic vehicle roll test methods, and constructs the global vehicle dynamics model by using Lagrange equation.Solve the roll angle gain under steady-state revolving conditions.Secondly, with reference to the design parameters of the ATV,the virtual prototype model of the ATV is constructed by ADAMS,which includes front and rear suspension subsystems, steering subsystems, wheel subsystems and so on.Finally, the steering wheel angle step simulation test is carried out according to the vehicle handling and stability test method using the built virtual prototype model. The parameters such as vehicle speed, steering angle, vehicle centroid height, vehicle load, front and rear tire lateral stiffness are selected to analyze the vehicle response by changing the size of each factor separately. The ADAMS/Insight is used to analyze the factors that have significant influence on the roll stability, and the design variables are changed to achieve the optimization goal of improving the roll stability. The optimized parameters are re-simulated in the multi-body dynamics model of the vehicle.By comparing and analyzing the post-processing curves,we can see that the vehicle roll stability has been improved to some extent, and the suspension kinematics characteristics are more reasonable, which proves the effectiveness of the optimization method.
