The metro has been developed fast all over the world because of the high transport ability, fast speed and convenient usage.Nearly all the large cities of the world have a metro system. However, the metro system is usually constructed in the urban area and it has an inevitable impact on the adjacent buildings, especially when the metro tunnel is beneath the buildings. The duration of the metro train-induced vibration is short, however, the vibration could produce noise which reduces the living quality of the building. This research focuses on the influence of the vibration caused by metro on the adjacent building. The characteristics of the response of buildings with different foundation were mainly studied. The research also includes the influencing factors such as the frequency of metro vibration, the depth of tunnel, the tunnel-building distance, the soil modulus, the modulus of treated ground and the pile length of building.Firstly, the response of the building with a shallow foundation on natural ground was studied. It found that the building with a shallow foundation has a decreasing respond as the vibration frequency of tunnel increases from 10 Hz to 100 Hz.The first floor has the smallest response although there is slight difference between floors. The response of the first floor decreases with the depth of tunnel increases and other upper floors do not has a significant regular relationship with the tunnel depth. The vibration of building decreases with the tunnel-building distance while increases with the soil modulus.Secondly, the response of the building on a composite foundation was investigated. As the modulus of the treated zone increases, the response of first floor decreases and the other floors do not show an obvious regularity.A larger depth of the treated zone can lead to a lower vibration of building.Thirdly, the response of the piled building was researched. For a given situation, the piled building has a larger vibration than that of building with shallow foundation. The response of the piled building decreases as the vibration frequency of tunnel increases from 10 Hz to 100 Hz.When the pile length increases, the response of each floor is different. The response of the first floor does not change much. The second floor has the maximum vibration when the pile length is 9m.The response of third floor decreases with the increasing pile length. Finally, the responses of the masonry,high-rise building and the building with a basement were researched. For the masonry,it has a larger response than that of frame building. The first floor of high-rise building has a larger vibration than that at the middle and top of the building. For a building with a 3m basement, its response is similar to that of the building without a basement.
