There are many advantages of precast segmental bridge pier have advantages such as small impact on the environment and traffic, reliable project quality and excellent self-recovering ability. It had attracted wide attention in scientific research and engineering practice. However, due to the poor integrity of the segmental piers,it is subjected to seismic loads. The seismic energy dissipation capacity under the effect is low.The conventional improvement measure is embedding energy-dissipation bars in the concrete at the end of the pier segment.Although this measure significantly improves the seismic energy dissipation capacity of segmental piers,it aggravates the plastic damage of the concrete. On the other hand it is very difficult to replace the energy-dissipation bars embedded in the concrete. So the segmental pier with energydissipation bars is difficult to repair after earthquake. Therefore, the segmental pier with external energy-dissipation plates was proposed.(1)The research method of this paper was based on the ABAQUS refined finite element numerical simulation. In order to determine a reasonable and effective simulation method, the modeling techniques and key points were elaborated. The simulation methord was verified and corrected by existing experiments. The cast-in-place bridge pier and precast segmental bridge pie according to the experiments were modeled and calculated in ABAQUS.By comparing the experimental results with the numerical simulation results,it was found that the deviations were within a reasonable range, which proved that this simulation methods could be used in this research.(2)The segmental pier with external energy-dissipation plates was new type structure, and its feasibility remains to be verified. In order to verify its feasibility,cast-in-place pier, traditional prefabricated pier and new prefabricated pier were designed. They had the same external dimensions and material properties. Then modeling and calculate the three piers using the method described earlier. After that analyzing the seismic performance of each structure through comparison of strength, stiffness, ductility, energy consumption, etc.to judge the new structure has practical value and it is necessary to carry out further research.(3)Parametric analysis of new structure including the degree of prestressing, the location of the prestressed steel strands the usage of energy-dissipation plates, and the slotting rate of the grooves. The effect of different parameters on the seismic performance of the structure was analyzed by PUSHOVER numerical simulation. The influence of each parameter on the selfrecovering performance of the structure was analyzed by load-unload numerical simulation.Combining the two analysis methods gave a reasonable range of parameters in the new structure.
