Abstract/Summary:
With China’s rapid economic growth, the level of motorization has been increasing, which has aggravated the problems of urban traffic congestion and air pollution.Transitoriented development has become one of the important solutions. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in discussing the relationship between urban built environment and transit travel behavior in the sphere of urban planning, aiming to improve the transit ridership and achieve low carbon development.Based on the big data of bus IC card, this article employs the hierarchical liner model and ArcGIS spatial analysis to explore the impacts of built environment and socioeconomic factors on transit travel behavior.Through the identification of significant indicators responsible for transit ridership, the critical indexes for land use optimization has been selected.Operational designing measures are proposed to optimize urban built environment, and eventually to provide theoretical and technical basis for transit-oriented urban planning and design. With the case study in the city of Wuhan, based on around 1 million IC card information and land use data, this study focuses on the quantitative relationship between the transit ridership with those factors related to built environment and socioeconomic, namely, density, diversity, block design, accessibility, population density and per capita income. The results show that the impact of the built environment and socio-economic factors on transit ridership are significant different across spatial districts. For example,In Jiang’an and Hongshan districts, building density, population density and transit investment obviously have significant positive effects, and the distance to destination plays negative impact. However,in Jianghan and Wuchang districts, there are positive correlations with diversity, and negative with building density. Therefore, different optimization strategies are developed for each municipal district by coupling both the modeling results and their self-spatial characteristics.Specifically, the improvement of building density and land use mix are suggested for Jianghan District, while the incensement of bus nodes are promoted for Jiangan and Hongshan Districts. This study overcomes the tedious and inaccurate disadvantages in traditional bus survey data, through the integration of the IC card big data and land use spatial data. The results of hierarchical liner model are successfully applied to the planning practice. It enriches the theory of low-carbon-oriented urban planning and design, and promotes a quantitative and scientific development in planning methodologies.
