As an important part of the city,the modern funeral building records its past and also carries the memory of the dead.In the craze of urban construction,the building of modern funeral parlor in our country seems to have been neglected.This is mainly due to people fear and strongly avoid the attitude of death culture.The academic research on funeral buildings also focuses on archeology or cultural practices aspect.However,in recent years,the rapid social development has led to the gathering of population to the cities.The old and insufficient quantity of funeral facilities can no longer meet the needs of the development of the times.In addition,the Bureau of Civil Affairs started to actively promote the funeral and interment reform.This provides a good opportunity for the construction of modern funeral parlors.Therefore,It is a positive meaning for the modern funeral building to adapt to the development of the times about explore the spatial relations.Based on the above background,the thesis traces the origin of the funeral culture,due to improve the understanding of funeral culture and funeral architecture through study the main content of the funeral culture,the differences between Chinese and Western funeral culture and the development of modern funeral architecture.Through a comparative analysis of the four funeral parlors around Nanjing on the overall layout,functional division,traffic line,landscape configuration and building facade research,discovered that the contemporary general funeral building in the Yangtze River Delta has problems of overall environmental imbalance,functional space Confusion,cross-flow of traffic streamlines,a single form of construction,lack of humane care and other issues,moreover,the author puts forward the reasons for the existence of the problems.Then,in view of the problems discovered,the modern funeral parlor’s space design starts from the relationship with the city,based on the structure pattern,traffic streamline and landscape elements of the overall layout,Then,combining with the functional remodeling of monomer,internal traffic and facade design,the author puts forward the corresponding design tactics.Finally,it implements the practical project to the pavilion project of Pavilion Funeral Building in Pukou District,Nanjing.Hope to provide reference for the planning and design of modern funeral building.
