Thermo-mechanical coupling phenomena exist in the drum brake during its working process, which produces high contact stress field and transient temperature.Kinetic and potential energies are applied and transformed into thermal energy and so that the process couples the different attributes such as stress, heat, and wear.Meanwhile, simulation along with the estimation of coupling phenomena is necessary for the designing and manufacturing.ThereforeTo investigate these attributes simultaneously, the numerical simulation method of stress – temperature – wear coupling problem based on finite element analysis is studied in this thesis.Archard linear wear model is added into the classical thermal-stress finite element modeling(FEM)through a preset interface in software ABAQUS?.User subroutine is coded to calculate the progressive accumulations of wear depth and to modify the node positions. The abrasive debris is taken into account by the use of an average wear coefficient and the contact heat transfer equation. The renewed surface profile is then used at the beginning of the next time step. Both stress – wear coupling and stress – temperature – wear coupling numerical simulation method are applied and simulate the running-in process of the drum brake and then the emergency braking condition respectively. The development of the stress, temperature and wear in the drum brake is exposed to be observed.Meanwhile,a bench test is designed to realize the temperature data acquisition under the emergency braking condition. The results show that the method can reflect the pressure field, temperature field and a wear change of the contact region, and obtain more comprehensive and clear experimental results. The experimental results along with the numerical simulation results and the curves of the friction plate’s temperature are stable respectively and consistent to each other. The three aspects which include stress, temperature and wear are associated with expansion properties of a substance which are discussed in undeviating simulation results and experimental results which fully authenticates this model.
