Abstract/Summary:
The number and scale of the constructed teaching buildings in China’s higher education institutions have been increasing,as the economy and society progress, and the education idea and teaching mode develop.Among various building types, many colleges and universities home and abroad are developing and constructing integrated teaching compound buildings. The teaching compound, consisting of multiple functions, serves better the gradually open and diverse higher education in modern times, which proposes an urgent need in the space design theory and methodology of the integrated teaching compound – more scientific and effective design strategies are needed to meet up with the rapid development of the teaching building construction. As the key point that connects inner and outer space of the teaching compound, the entrance hall,if its design strategies are studied, will have a critical practical significance to the improvement of the teaching environment of higher institutions. In the field of spatial design, there are many people-oriented research methods and theories, among which the pedestrian flow simulation is a relatively mature and scientific research method. Most of the existing research on the crowd movement simulation focuses on the research on the simulation methods,or research on the safety of the pedestrian during the evacuation inside a space using simulation methods. However, the research of spatial design strategies based on the simulation and analysis of pedestrian movement inside a certain type of space using quantitative methods is rarely seen. The purpose of this paper is to explore design methods that can improve the pedestrian traffic efficiency inside the entrance hall of the teaching compound in higher education institutions by employing the research methods of the pedestrian flow simulation. The paper simulates the main crowds and their activities inside the entrance hall through spatial factors that have an influence on the crowd movement: firstly, the paper collects the entrance hall cases from the large number of the newly-built teaching compounds in higher education institutions, and analyzes and summarizes the critical factors that affect the crowd movement among which the core influencing factors include: spatial form of the entrance hall, entrance and exit, vertical traffic and space dividers.Secondly, the paper selects the Mass Motin as the simulation tool after analyzing the pros and cons of different model theories and simulation software.Thirdly, the simulation framework is built up after integrating the characteristics of various influencing factors, students’ movement pattern inside the entrance hall, and the features of simulation software. The one-variable-at-a-time method is used to simulate the pedestrian flow under the influence of every influencing factor, and the factor’s effect on the crowd movement is analyzed by combining simulation data.In the end,the paper induces the pattern of the influence on pedestrian flow inside the entrance hall of the teachin g compound in the higher education institutions by spatial form, entrance and exit, vertical traffic, and spatial dividers, based on the simulation results. With the reference to the actual cases, the paper summarizes the design strategies that can optimiz e the pedestrian flow efficiency in the entrance hall of the teaching compound,in order to enhance the living and study quality of teachers and students in the higher education institutions, which,to some extent, has positive significance to the scientif ic development of the entrance hall of the teaching compound in higher education institutions.
