Geometric textures are ubiquitous in nature,describing a common phenomenon of biological forms.Correspondingly,the pattern design of geometric features on surfaces is widely used in the design of industrial patterns,computer animation,architectural geometry,electronic products and bionic skin structures et al.It is not only required to reduce the design threshold and improve the efficiency,but also expected to satisfy the user-specified constraints and parametrically drive the feature distribution for quick response of the frequent changes.However,there are many difficulties in the study of the interactive pattern design of geometric features on mesh surface due to the complexity of the surface and the multiple degrees of freeform geometric features.This paper focuses on the problems existing in the pattern design of geometric features on mesh surfaces.The main research contents and results are as follows:(1)By extracting the boundary of geometrical features as constraints,a method for design of geometric features with boundary on mesh surface is proposed.This method greatly simplifies the design of geometric features on mesh surface by expressing the complex spatial positional relationship between geometric features and the target mesh surface by the position,orientation,and size of the feature boundary on mesh surface,and features like free forms,stretching geometries,holes are further suited.(2)Using a field-aligned parameterization method with a directional field as input to build the iso-line on mesh surface,a new technique is presented for easily controlling the distribution and orientation of features over a surface.In addition,the directional field design is used to drive the pattern design on mesh surface to achieve parameterized driven and user-specified constraint driven pattern design.(3)A pattern design framework is presented to decouple pattern design and geometric feature generation.It provided a variety of interactive operations to satisfy the users frequent design changes and generate the user-desired geometric features.Furthermore,to solve the mesh fusion of multiple features and the same target mesh model,a mesh fusion algorithm based on the concept of optimal fusion subset are proposed,which greatly improves the efficiency.A geometric pattern design software is developed under the research results.The main functions as flows: design of the iso-line driven by the directional field,generation of sketch features,generation of free-form features,mesh fusion and so on.
