The aerodynamic optimization of the external shape has a big influence on the performance of the vehicle, leading to a better handling characteristics, stability and less fuel consumption,as well as reducing emission of the dioxide gaz. This research provide with the help of computational fluid dynamic simulations two optimization methods and its impact on the reduction of the aerodynamic drag.Based on a two-dimensional studies of the air flow over a passenger car with different windshield angle, the aim of this simulation is to provide the basic guideline for the three dimensional shape optimization,a three dimensional BMW 3 series sedan car model has been modeled using Alias Autostudio 2016 a NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline)modeling tool with a Class A and Class B surfaces. In this project, the external shape of the car was modeled with the mentioned software and the interior was not modeled.ANSYS WORKBENCH 17.0 was used to carry out the 2D and 3D simulation of the air flow over the car using the realizable k-epsilon turbulent model which is one of the best model for the automated calculation process for the given car domain. The turbulent model, the mesh quality and the boundary condition were discussed in this project.
