The winter time in the hot summer and cold winter area of China is short,so it is traditionally defined as the non-central heating area. However, people's demands for the thermal comfort of the indoor thermal environment in winter have also greatly increased, with the economy boom of China and the great improvement of people's living standards, which makes winter heating in this area become common. But heating in this area in winter has obvious characteristic of intermittent energy use during local space and local time.In this intermittent heating mode, part of the heat is used to heat the internal thermal mass of the room?inner building envelope,furniture,etc.?.Therefore,the characteristics of indoor thermal environment change and energy consumption are different from those of centralized continuous heating in northern area.In this paper, the indoor thermal environment and energy consumption indexes under different thermal mass conditions are first measured and analyzed under the intermittent heating mode of the artificial climate room. The results show the internal thermal mass always absorbs heat from indoor air during heating stage. The impact on the indoor thermal environment becomes greater and the amount of indoor energy consumption becomes larger with the increase of the quantity of thermal mass.At the same time, the effect of thermal mass on energy consumption and indoor thermal environment becomes more significant with the increase of temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. With the continuation of each heating process, the effect of increasing of the heating energy consumption of the thermal mass will continue to diminish.Considering the heat absorption of the thermal mass will significantly increase the energy consumption of the intermittent heating room, this paper explores the possibility of reducing the heating energy consumption by providing insulation on the surface of the thermal mass. The field measurement research is carried out in an artificial climate chamber and different thermal resistance insulation layers is set on the surface of the thermal mass. The results show the insulation layer designed for the internal thermal mass can effectively inhibit thermal mass from absorbing heat from the room and reduce heating energy consumption. When the thermal resistance of the regenerator is 0.150.32 m2·K·W-1,the heat absorption capacity of the regenerator can be reduced by 13.4%39.5%,and the heating energy consumption can be reduced by 3.6%11.8%.The energy-saving effect becomes more significant with the increase of temperature difference between indoor and outdoor.Similarly,as the heating process continues, the influence of the insulation layer will continue to diminish. The average value of the thermal mass level of actual building will be much higher than the actual heat capacity measured in the artificial climate chamber,so the energy-saving effect will be higher. Therefore, this energy saving measure is worthy of practical application.
