The current society is immersed in an era of rapid science and technology development.Advanced education in China is also moving towards an integration of technology,information,and diversification at full speed.While novel methods constantly lead the progress of advanced education,the infrastructure of university campus is also expanding with innovation in order to fulfill the society needs.With this background,laboratory buildings become an important platform for universities to conduct research and experiments,and they are essential to promote advanced education as well as scientific development progress.However,if the school board fails to provide specifications on personnel or spatial requirements prior to the beginning of the construction,or if the building is unable to accommodate the designated research work due to prolonged period of construction,the building will have to face structural modification or even reconstruction after the completion of the original construction.This situation will result in serious waste of resources and heavier financial burden for the school.Therefore,to avoid such grave consequences,the author of this paper proposed a solution to the above problem using an open building theory that can equip the buildings with potentials for sustainable development.This paper begins with a discussion of the theoretical perspective of architectural design and the origination and development of open building concept.Then it summarizes the definition,objectives,basic characteristics,spatial organization,and layout principles of open building theory,followed by an analysis on the feasibility of applying open building theory to university buildings.Secondly,building on the relevant theoretical research work,this paper discusses the evolution of multi-purpose laboratory buildings in universities and the relevant architectural theories and spatial characteristics.Different issues arised from the designs are examined,and the necessity of integrating open building theory into the construction of multi-purpose university buildings is suggested.Finally,by combining the open building theory and the relevant studies on multi-purpose laboratory buildings in universities,the author innovatively outlines and summarizes the design methods for multi-purpose laboratory buildings in universities with respect to the principles of open building theory.Using the teaching and experiment comprehensive building(stage two)in Shandong Architecture University as an example,this paper tests and verifies the proposed design method,and concludes by using this example as a reference and guidance for the subsequent related designs.
