PVB laminated glass is widely used in windshield glass because of its load-carrying capacity, energy absorption characteristics and good optical properties. With the increase of the number of cars in our country and the frequent occurrence of traffic accidents, especially the collision between people and vehicles,it is of great significance to study the impact damage characteristics of the windshield glass for protecting the life safety of vulnerable road users and drivers and passengers. At present, the impact failure characteristics of windshield glass are mainly studied by theoretical analysis, experimental analysis and numerical simulation analysis.Based on the intrinsic cohesive model, this paper studies the impact failure characteristics of PVB laminated glass, considering the cracking of glass layer and the peeling between glass and PVB.The classical linear elastic fracture mechanics,elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and intrinsic cohesive model are introduced and compared. Then,a quarter symmetrical finite element model of PVB laminated glass plate impacted by drop weight is established according to the experiment, and Fortran program is written to define the intrinsic cohesive element with zero thickness between the glass finite elements. The impact damage process of PVB laminated glass plate is simulated and analyzed with ABAQUS.The simulation results are compared with the test results, and the model and simulation method are verified. Then, the influence of finite element types and finite element mesh distribution on simulation analysis accuracy and efficiency is discussed. The analysis shows that the simulation analysis accuracy and efficiency of hexahedral element and radial distribution mesh are the best. Also, the whole model of PVB laminated glass plate is established and the difference between the discrete element method and the finite element method is compared. The results show that the two methods are similar in the accuracy of simulation analysis, while the finite element method is more efficient in calculation. Finally, the simulation of the impact of the falling ball on the windshield is carried out,and suggestions for further experiments are given.A half symmetric finite element model of the impact of the dummy head impactor with radial mesh, pentahedron and hexahedron elements on the windshield was established. The model considers the crack of the glass and the peeling damage between the glass and the PVBin the process of impact. The difference between the simulation results of ABAQUS and the experimental results is small, which shows that the model is correct.Summarize the research content of this paper, based on the intrinsic cohesive model, the radial mesh finite element model, which considers the crack of the windshield glass layer and the peeling damage between the glass and PVB,can effectively simulate and predict the impact damage process of the windshield glass, and provide a reliable simulation and analysis method for the optimal design of the windshield glass and the protection of vulnerable road users.
