Polyphenylene sulfone(PPSU)is a special engineering plastic that combines excellent mechanical properties,heat resistance,biocompatibility and flame retardancy.With the product of domestic PPSU,more and more applications have been obtained in transportation,food,chemical,environmental protection and medical care.The strength and heat resistance of PPSU can be further improved by filling with short-cut glass fiber(GF).However,due to the high rigidity of the PPSU molecular chain and the high melt viscosity,processing temperature of PPSU is above 335 ~oC,which makes it difficult to fill GF into PPSU.It greatly limits the development of fiber reinforced PPSU composites.There is an urgent need to prepare glass fiber reinforced PPSU composites with excellent melt flow properties and mechanical properties.In this paper,the thermoplastic amorphous engineering polycarbonate(PC)with relatively low processing temperature was used to improve the processing properties of GF/PPSU composites,and the rheological,mechanical,thermal properties of the series of materials were characterized.The results demonstrated that the extrusion temperature of the GF/PPSU/PC(30:63:7)composite can be reduced from 365 ~oC of GF/PPSU(80:20)to 340 ~oC,the screw speed increased from 10 rpm to 30 rpm,and GF loading from 20 wt%to 30 wt%.The processing efficiency was greatly improved.The tensile strength increased from 94.5MPa to 122.2 MPa,the flexural strength increased from 141.5 MPa to 151.0 MPa,and the Izod notched impact strength increased from 79.2 J/m to 86.7 J/m.SEM photographs indicated that glass fibers slightly interlace in the matrix,which improve the mechanical properties of the composite.On this basis,the thermoplastic crystalline engineering plastic polyamide 66(PA66)was used to improve the melt fluidity of the PPSU composite,and the epoxy resin was used to improve the compatibility of two phases of PPSU and PA66.The study found that GF/PPSU/PA66(30:63:7)composite had better processing properties,and the extrusion temperature of did not exceed 330 ~oC,the screw speed can be set as 50 rpm.The torque rheological test indicated that PA66 significantly reduced melt power law index of the polymer matrix.Epoxy resin significantly improved the compatibility of PPSU and PA66interface.The addition of 1.0 wt%epoxy resin increased the elongation at break of PPSU/PA66 blend from 10.5%to 44.1%;the flexural strength of GF/PPSU/PA66 composites increased from 135.6 MPa to 146.2 MPa.SEM photo analysis of the impact fracture surface revealed that the phase separation of PPSU and PA66 was significantly weakened.The results of differential calorimetric scanning and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that epoxy resin can reduce the glass transition temperature of PPSU phase in the blend by 2.5 ~oC,improved compatibility of PPSU and PA66.PPSU,PA66 and epoxy resin with a mass ratio of89.1:9.9:1.0 were used as the matrix,the tensile strength of the composite containing 30.0 wt%glass fiber was 101.1 MPa,the flexural strength was 146.2 MPa,and the notched impact strength was 73.8 J/m.Both good mechanical and processing properties were maintained.
