Salt damage is one of the common diseases in porous materials such as grey brick,which may cause the efflorescence,crack and detachment of heritage objects.The migration mechanism of water and soluble salt in porous materials is a critical issue to understand and solve salt damage.Although there have been many studies in the field of salt damage in porous heritage substrates,the mechanism of water and salt migration in porous materials has not been fully studied and reliable conclusions have not been reached.In this study,grey brick masonry structures constructed with different binding materials,together with brick masonries treated with different protection materials were taken as experimental objects.This study discusses the migration rule of water and soluble salt in grey brick masonry and explores the influence of different organosilicon materials on the water and salt migration in the brick masonry.Zeta-potential test,porosity analysis and SEM observation were used to evaluate the intrinsic properties of grey bricks.In addition,a simulation experiment was set up to measure the deterioration,salt crystallization,streaming potential and ion distribution of the grey brick masonry.Some rules about ion migration velocity,dynamic distribution of anions and cations in masonry were obtained.Reliable conclusions about salt erosion resistance of binding materials,influence of several typical organosilicon materials on surface properties of grey bricks and salt solution migration in masonry were drawn.It was found that water and soluble salt had different migration rules in grey brick masonry with different binding materials,and different protective materials had different effects on water and salt migration in masonry.It is helpful to understand the mechanism of water and soluble salt migration in porous materials,and to provide scientific support for the protection practice of cultural relics such as desalination and preventive protection of porous cultural relics.
