While pursuing economic development, enterprises must also give consideration to environmental protection. As the core of enterprise operation, senior executives should pursue both financial benefits and environmental performance of enterprises. It can be seen from the higher-order theory that the characteristics of senior executives affect the strategy of enterprises and their decisions affect the environmental performance of enterprises. In order to ensure the sustainable development of enterprises, the correlation between the background characteristics of senior executives and the environmental performance of enterprises is worth studying. In the past, the heavily polluting industry was the main producer of environmental problems, but now it also bears the hope of green operation and development. Therefore, this paper took the a-share listed companies in China's heavily polluting industry from 2013 to 2017 as an example to study the correlation between the characteristics of senior executives and environmental performance, and to explore whether there are differences in the correlation between the characteristics of senior executives and environmental performance under different enterprise properties.First of all, this paper expounds the existing research results and comments on them by sorting out rele, vant domestic and foreign literatures.Secondly, based on higher-order theory, stakeholder theory, sustainable development theory and principal-agent theory, this paper provides theoretical support for the research content of this paper, and proposes five hypotheses based on this. Finally, this paper draws the following conclusions:first, age and education of senior executives have significant positive effects on environmental performance;Secondly, there is a positive correlation between the proportion of female executives and environmental performance, but it is not significant.Third, executive tenure has no significant impact on environmental performance.Fourth, there is a difference in the correlation between executives'characteristics and environmental performance under different property rights.Specifically, compared with state-owned enterprises,non-state-owned enterprises have a more significant correlation between executives'age, education background and the proportion of women and environmental performance, while the tenure of executives has a negative correlation with environmental performance. Finally, this paper proposes suggestions based on the inspection results, hoping to help enterprises in heavy pollution industries in China improve their environmental performance.Based on the research on the correlation between executive characteristics and environmental performance in heavy polluting industries, this paper has some innovations and some shortcomings.First of all,the sample industries in this paper cover a relatively complete range, which can play a role in research, exploration and help for the whole heavy pollution industry.Secondly, this paper explores the moderating effect of the property right nature, which enriches the relevant researches on the characteristics of senior executives and environmental performance. However, this paper hopes that the variables of executive characteristics can be improved and more appropriate environmental performance indicators can be found in the following studies. The improvement of enterprise environmental performance is extremely urgent in China. It is hoped that the research method and content of this paper can give some enlightenment to the follow-up research, and the research results and Suggestions of this paper can be helpful for enterprises and governments to solve environmental problems.
