Hydroquinone(HQ)is an important organic compound in chemical engineering industry.It is widely used as the main material for the production of dyes,photosensitive materials,synthetic materials,fertilizer additives,rubber additives and herbicides.It is toxic,has a strong erosive effect on the skin and mucous membranes,can damage the liver or inhibit the central nervous system.Resorcinol(RC)is an important organic chemical raw material and synthetic intermediate.It is widely applied to produce dyes,resins,plastics,rubber and adhesives.It is moderately toxic and can also corrode skin and mucous membranes.It can be instantly absorbed by the skin when contacted,producing methemoglobin which causes cyanosis,lethargy and fatal kidney damage.Therefore,it is necessary to establish new methods for quick and accurate determination of HQ and RC.The present paper reports a new capillary gas chromatography for quick and accurate determination of HQ and RC in commercial hair dyes.This method has the good merits of high selectivity,low sample consumption,short analysis time and easy operation.The method was evaluated after the operation conditions were optimized.The detection limits are 1.2 ?g/g and 2.8 ?g/g,the recoveries range from 91.5% to 103.7% and from 89.0% to 105.9% and the inter-day precisions are from 0.85% to 1.25% and from 0.93% to 1.43%(RSD%,n=3)for HQ and RC,respectively.HPLC-UV is a common method for determination of HQ and RC,but its detection ability is not enough to determine the HQ and RC in environmental water owing to the low contents.Therefore,the present paper constructed a solid phase extraction(SPE)-HPLC-UV system using a homemade interface for determination of HQ and RC in environmental water.The detection ability of the SPE-HPLC-UV system was greatly improved further when “zone-cutting” strategy was used.The method was evaluated after the operating conditions were optimized.The detection limits are 0.076 ?g/L and 0.089 ?g/L(S/N=3),the recoveries are from 92.3% to 101.5% and from 95.9% to 102.3%,the inter-day precisions are from 1.8% to 3.1% and from 2.5% to 3.3%(RSD%,n= 3)for HQ and RC,respectively.These results show that the proposed method is sensitive,accurate and reproducible for determination of HQ and RC in environmental water.
