For the renewable development of our society,biomass and biomass-derivatives have drawn much attention because of its huge resources and environmental protection.However,large amount of glycerol could be expected to be by-produced by the biodiesel production.Among the chemicals that can be converted from glycerol,1,3-propanediol is the most promising target,which is the raw material of large-scale production of polyester and polyurethane resin.Monolithic catalyst could be an attractive replacement for powder catalyst in heterogeneous catalysts,especially in the conversion of biomass-related chemicals.Monolith reactor has clear operational advantages over slurry bed,including high efficiency and easy catalyst separation.The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol over monolithic catalyst have great importance in the utilization of biodiesel and biomass-derivatives.In this work,the Ir-Re bimetallic monolithic catalysts were prepared by impregnation,and examined for the glycerol hydrogenolysis.The coating method and parameters were intensively investigated,including the type of slurry,the immersion times and drying conditions.Results have shown as follows:1.Three different powder monolith materials,cordierite,ZrO2 and SiC,were employed as catalyst supports of the Ir-Re catalyst.It was indicated that Ir-Re/Cordierite powder had the best catalytic performance in glycerol hydrogenolysis.2.The effect of SiO2 slurry and commercial Ludox,the immersion times and drying conditions on the properties of the bare cordierite monolith have shown that the loading of layer could greatly impact the BET surface of the cordierite and the cohesion between the SiO2 coat layer and the monolith.3.The Ir-Re/SiO2/cordierite was successfully prepared by impregnation method,and this monolithic catalyst showed higher selectivity of 1,3-propanediol at a large WHSV(9 h-1)in the glycerol hydrogenolysis,compared with Ir-Re/cordierite powder catalyst.
